What's a Tesla Coil?

First things first—what is a Tesla coil? This amazing device was invented by Nikola Tesla, a brilliant inventor. The Tesla Coil shoots glowing arcs of electricity at nearby conductive objects, usually made of highly conductive things like metal or water.

A Tesla coil is all about electricity, and there are two types we should know about:

AC (Alternating Current): Powerful electricity that is found in your home outlets.

DC (Direct Current): Weaker electricity found in things like batteries.

Tesla's invention uses AC current to create high-voltage sparks of electricity that can jump through the air!

The Science Behind the Sparks

When the Tesla Coil is activated, the negative electrons in the electricity want to find a positively charged object to flow into since opposite-charged particles attract each other. When we see the arcs of electricity produced by the Tesla Coil, this is what happens in the electric beams.

Shocking Experiments

In the video, you will see Covalent and Ionic Bond show off many things the Tesla Coil can do! You will see that powerful electric beams can flow through things like metal and even the human body due to their high levels of electric conduction! But it struggles to flow through objects made of poor conductors like plastic.

You will also see the Tesla Coil use its electricity to power giant lightbulbs and produce a supercharged glowing state of matter called PLASMA!
